About the PESCA Project

The Overall Objective and specific Objectives

The overall objective of this action is to achieve increased, sustainable and commercially viable smallholder aquaculture production that is environmentally friendly, climate smart and gender and socially responsive.

  • To organize POs to provide for gender and socially responsive PO management practices
  • To adopt and implement BMPs and access competent extension services as well as bottom up information gathering and management
  • To promote trust, efficiency and timely delivery of services and support to members of POs
  • To develop the capacity and support model POs to acquire appropriate means for implementing their own strategies in a profitable self-reliant manner with involvement and participation of the memberships
  • To promote integration of environment management and climate change adaptation in management practices of POs and aquaculture practices of members.

Co-applicants – Kajjansi Aquaculture Research and Development Centre (KARDC) of the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO); Aquafarm Consults Ltd(AFC); Nalubowa-Lusembo & Company Estates Ltd (NLE); and Eccelenzia Consorzio Research and Management (ECRAM).

Multi-level structure and network of Aquaculture Producer Organizations will consist of Cluster farmer groups, producer organisations, District and regional Committees and Apex body

Months of project Implementation The project will implemented in twenty four months starting January 2020 to Decemeber 2021 with no cost-extension of six months ending June 2022

Districts of Uganda The project will be implemented in the Six regions of Uganda targeting 35 districts of Uganda

Target groups and beneficiaries

Aquaculture value chain actors

Small-scale commercial hatchery operators (one per each target district), and 12 small-scale commercial feed producers

Farmed fish traders and processors

These include 3 fish traders and one fish processor per region, fish consumers

Regulators

Such as MAAIF, UBOS, UNBS, MWE, URA, selected DLGs, community leaders; CSOs and CBOs working in fish farming

Smallholder aquaculture producers

6,000 smallholder aquaculture producers drawn from the 60 targeted Producer Organisations

Hatchery operators & commercial feed producers

32 hatchery operators and 12 commercial feed producers

Farmed fish traders and processors

24 farmed fish traders and processors.

Trainers of Trainees

120 Training of POs Technical Managers and local Extension Workers as Trainers of Trainees (TOTs) (20 persons per region); a minimum of 10 women and 10 youth per target POs.

Farmers

60 farmers in environmentally sustainable and climate resilient aquaculture production systems (one lead farmer per targeted PO).
